In the In-Between: Journal of New and New Media Photography is pleased to present “Another Day in Paradise,” a juried group exhibition hosted by Gravy Gallery & Studio in Philadelphia, PA. The exhibition will open with a public reception at Gravy on July 13th from 6-9pm.
This exhibition features work from nine photographic artists selected from an open call that received nearly 75 submissions. Featured in the show will be: Nick Marshall, Kalee Appleton, Josh Lord, Danielle Ezzo, Will Matsuda, Ira Wagner, Martina Sauter, Bree Lamb, and Melissa Eder.
The works of these artists reflect a broad span of photographic strategies that explore notions of paradise, idealism, and fantasy in visual form. Throughout the show there exist competing lines of visual rhetoric that represent strategies of commercialism, “camp”, irony, appropriation and manipulation, as well as interpretative and observational modes of documentary practice.
Each artist submitting to the call for entry responded to the following prompt:
“The vast majority of photographs we see in our day-to-day lives present idealized versions of their subject matters, often making the world seem cleaner, more orderly, and more beautiful than it actually is. It’s difficult to grasp the profound influence we are subject to within our inescapable media-diets of beautiful images that offer promises of something better.”
On August 1st, “Another Day in Paradise” will open as an expanded online exhibition on In the In-Between. The online version of the show will include a further 21 artists selected from the open call by In the In-Between editors Gregory Eddi Jones and Anastasia Samoylova. The artists selected for this expanded exhibition will be announced by In the In-Between on July 15th.
“Another Day in Paradise” at Gravy Gallery & Studio will run through August 24th.
